Felissimo Design House presents Mira Images
New York, NY 2005 – Contemporary rugs and wall hangings are the focus of the exhibition, Mira Images from Oaxaca, Mexico, which fuses artwork by Mira Jokic and hand-crafted weavings by indigenous Mexican weavers. The collaboration combines Mira's nature-inspired images with the artisans’ eco-friendly dyeing and weaving processes to create an artistic product that connects our cultures and fulfills the basic needs of living and working in harmony with the environment.
The indigenous weavers who participated in this collaboration reside in Oaxaca, one of Mexico’s most renowned centers for arts and crafts. Many artisans who reside in this area follow the traditions of their ancestors and are strongly rooted in weaving designs that incorporate traditional images and symbols. With the inspiration of Mira’s images, the artisans are able to expand their skills and better connect with a world that is rapidly becoming global. Mira is committed not only to seeing her contemporary images transformed into beautiful weavings, but also to sharing her knowledge of the global market with this indigenous community.
About the Artist: Mira Jokic is a contemporary artist and founder of Mira Images, and has resided in Oaxaca, Mexico for the past three years. Jokic originally arrived in Oaxaca to paint and sculpt and return to fine arts, in which she holds a Bachelor of Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts (Belgrade, Serbia). Her artwork is strongly influenced by years spent in the textile industry and a fondness that grew for certain materials, such as silk, paper, wool and cotton. After Mira arrived in Mexico, she became involved with a group of indigenous weavers and started developing artistic weavings. Inspiration for these weavings came from her surroundings and times spent in nature, which was her way of balancing life in the city.
